1 in 5 Scots 'want to move abroad'

One in five Scottish people would move abroad in order to improve their financial situation, according to a new study.

Research by Legal & General revealed that 19 per cent of people in Scotland would consider relocating in order to escape high living costs in the UK.

A large number of respondents said the credit crunch has left them financially stretched, as the price of food, petrol and utility bills has soared in recent months.

Tim Warren, wealth communications manager at Legal & General, described the findings as "startling".

Speaking to the Scotsman, he commented: "In the current financial climate it's prudent for people to tighten their belts."

Mark Wallace of the Taxpayer's Alliance said the figures show that the UK has become a very "inhospitable" place for "ordinary people".

This comes after a separate study by NatWest revealed that people from the UK could see their salary go up by as much as 43% if they move abroad.
