Airlines predicts extra demand for Turkish flights
British Midland Airways (bmi) has announced that it is expecting passenger numbers on its Turkish services to go up this year.
The airline, which recently launched direct flights between Heathrow and Ankara, said it expected the service to become more popular during 2008.
However, at a press conference reported by the Turkish Daily News, bmi did admit that it was facing strong competition from other airlines.
Gail Holden, commercial development manager at the carrier, commented: "The Turkish market is a sophisticated one.
"Already a lot of companies operate to and from Turkey in comparison to many other destinations of bmi."
Ms Holden said this meant the airline had to be at the "top of our game" with regards to the Turkish market.
The current level of competition surrounding the country reflects its growing popularity as a holiday destination.
Last month, culture and tourism minister Ertugrul Gunay revealed plans to promote Turkey more heavily in places such as Japan, China and the US.
