AKP wins Turkish election
Turkey will see a fresh parliament after the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) won the elections there.
After a largely peaceful election day, the AKP received 46.6% of the overall vote, a margin of victory not seen since the 50's, reports the Turkish Daily News.
The main opposition party will continue to be the Republican People's Party (CHP), which gained 21% of the overall vote.
In addition, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) garnered 14.3% of the votes, giving it 71 seats in Turkish parliament.
Moreover, the Democratic Society party will now be able to form a group in parliament after the individual election of 25 candidates.
Overall 14 parties ran in the election along with 700 independent candidates, for the 5-year parliamentary terms, the paper reported.
In related news, Turkish businesses flourished in 2006, with good levels of growth posted in the year, according to the Istanbul Chamber of Industry.
