Albania 'could be next big Mediterranean destination'

A travel writer has explained why a growing number of foreign visitors are being attracted to Albania.

Although the country is still a little-known destination among European holidaymakers, Heather Cowper of balkantravellers.com claims that recent investments in Albania's infrastructure are set to boost the country and could make it a major Mediterranean destination.

She explains that the country has much to offer adventurous travellers, with its beaches and coastline particularly impressive for those who enjoy beach holidays.

Albania has 450 kilometres of coastline and the resort of Durres is already a popular location for holidaymakers, while resorts on the southern Ionian coastline are less busy and offer a variety of watersports.

Other reasons to visit Albania include the country's rich culture and heritage, its beautiful landscape and the capital Tirana, which is renowned for its colourful buildings and lively nightlife.

The Albania economy recorded economic growth of 9.9% in the four quarters to September 30th 2008.
