Albania preparing for boost in beach tourism

The beaches of Albania are set to establish the country as a major tourist destination in 2009, it has been claimed.

Visits to Albania's coast – still an "undiscovered gem" in terms of European beach holidays – will increase as awareness of the nation's unspoilt sandy beaches grows, according to the Observer.

Derek Moore, chairman of the Association of Independent Tour Operators, said that an increasing number of travel companies are providing holidays to Albania's beaches, as well as historic cities such as Butrint and the capital Tirana.

"There aren't many undiscovered countries left in Europe, but Albania is certainly one of them," he told the newspaper.

"It has a stunning coastline with miles of empty beaches and many cultural sites to discover."

Albanian resorts such as Durres combine areas of historical interest – Roman baths and an ancient amphitheatre – with beautiful beaches.

Michel Platini, president of European football's governing body Uefa, is due to visit both Durres and Tirana this week for talks with Albanian sporting officials.
