Albania recommended as 'lively' holiday destination
Albania offers a unique and beguiling experience for European holidaymakers looking for something different.
This is according to the Independent, which recently made the country destination of the week in its travel section.
Noting that Albania's cities are shaking off their communist past with "reconstruction at a furious rate", the newspaper recommends a visit to the capital Tirana, which is described as "lively, if baffling".
In addition, holidaymakers are urged to travel to Durres, a port which is "steeped in history" and still bears the hallmarks of its former Roman inhabitants, even if "cattle now graze where gladiators once battled".
The newspaper also commends the "splendid beach" at Durres, which was not open to the public during communist rule.
Derek Moore, chairman of the Association of Independent Tour Operators, recently told the Observer that Albania is set to experience a boom in beach tourism next year.
