Albanian government optimistic over Nato membership
Albania's government believes the country is likely to join Nato in the near future, according to a media report.
BalkanInsight.com stated that foreign minister Lulzim Basha was optimistic about being invited to enter the international alliance during its summit in April.
Mr Basha said he had formed this opinion after meeting with several prominent officials including Nato secretary-general Jaap de Hoop and Javier Solana, foreign policy chief at the EU.
A press release from the foreign ministry read: "During these meetings Basha gained full-scale support for Albanias objective of receiving the invitation for Nato membership at the summit of Bucharest."
Meanwhile, Podgorica has reported that Janusz Bugajski of the Centre for Strategic Studies also believes the country will be invited to join Nato.
He added that it was also likely that Croatia and Montenegro would become members of the group within the next few years.
