Ambassador: Bulgaria is attractive for US investment but has untapped potential
Bulgaria's geographical location and membership of the European Union make it an attractive destination for US investors, the US ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle has asserted.
According to the Sophia Echo, Mr Beyrle talked of the advantages of being close to the Middle East and Africa, as well as being part of Europe, to broadcaster bTV.
Sectors that Mr Beyrle identified as being attractive to US investors included real estate, tourism, information technology and energy.
However, despite the attractions the country already holds, Bulgaria would have the potential to attract more foreign investment if the government addressed problems in key areas, he said.
There needs to be greater political involvement with capital of unclear origin and the country can increase competitiveness by implementing better legal practices. These will complement the stability and economic growth Bulgaria already has, Mr Beyrle said.
Earlier this month, the ambassador urged the Bulgarian authorities to do more to battle corruption, asserting that it would help attract more US companies.
