Argentina registers increase in salaries

Salaries in Argentina for workers in all sectors increased in October, reports the Buenos Aires Herald.

The newspaper reports that, according to figures from the Indec national statistics bureau, an overall increase of 1.6% was recorded on salaries for the month of October.

Contracted workers gained an extra 1.9%, while workers without a contract gained 1.2 %. Public employees' salaries registered the highest increase at 3.3%.

According to the CIA world fact book, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita for the country stood at $14, 200 in 2008. This places Argentina 80th in the world for GDP per capita out of over 200 countries.

Since depths of the Argentinean economic crisis in December 2001, when the country experienced serious political and financial upheaval, salaries have increased by over 223%.

Latest figures from Torcuato di Tella University about the economy show that consumer confidence is beginning to return in Argentina, particularly in areas around the capital Buenos Aires.
