Backley highlights his Portuguese investment success
Former British javelin number one Steve Backley, who won gold medals in Commonwealth and European Games, sold a Portuguese property last year after the investment had doubled in a five-year period.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, the former Olympian who has also held the world record in his discipline, described how he managed to collect a high return from his original outlay.
Detailing his experience in the property market, he explained how he saw the potential of the overseas property when he was on an athletics training camp in 2000.
"I saw the burst of tourism and investment going on around Faro and I could feel that it was spreading west," Backley recalled. "I looked round the showroom and signed the papers that same day."
He added that his wife still owns an investment property in Spain, so they still have a place to go when they want to escape England. The sports star had to sell his Portuguese property when he started a family.
