Bad weather drives Britons abroad

Inclement weather in Britain is prompting many people to travel abroad this winter, according to an expert.

Sean Tipton from the Association of British Travel Agents stated that a large number of consumers were booking cheap flights overseas in order to enjoy warmer conditions.

Speaking to the Western Mail, he said that this year's wet summer was one of the main causes of the winter exodus, as the torrential rain earlier this year prompted a rush for foreign holidays.

However, the demand was so high that many had been unable to snap up cheap deals and did not get to enjoy a summer break.

Mr Tipton commented: "There was a rush to book holidays in July and August, but everything had sold out and a lot of people didn’t get to go abroad."

He added that there had been a ten per cent increase in the number of winter sun holidays, with many opting to go to places such as north Africa.

This comes after research by the Post Office revealed that about 2.4 million Britons will spend Christmas Day and New Year's Eve out of the country.
