Brazil to benefit from Amazon tourism
More people could be set to visit Brazil on account of a new campaign to promote tourism in the Amazon Rainforest area.
According to the Xinhua news agency, the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation (ACTO) will promote the Amazon region as a tourist destination at over 80 events during the next 12 months.
These events will primarily take place in the eight countries in which the Amazon Basin is located - Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.
Occupying over 7.5 million square kilometres, the Amazon Basin takes up about 40 per cent of the South American continent, but is still relatively unknown to many visitors.
However, the ACTO hopes to change this through a series of festivals, indigenous celebrations, social forums and carnival events in the next year.
Approximately 54% of the Amazon Basin is located within Brazilian borders.
