Brazilian economy 'getting stronger'

A leading official in Brazil has said that the country will emerge from the economic downturn in a stronger position than when the global banking crisis began.

Dilma Rousseff, chief of staff for Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, told a meeting in Brazil recently that the nation's financial system is well-equipped to survive the current uncertainty, Brazzil magazine reports.

"We are going to leave stronger than we came in. We have built the government's capacity to react in the face of the crisis … We do not have to accept conditions from any monetary fund," Ms Rousseff said.

Analysts in Brazil believe the country should avoid the major economic turmoil suffered by other nations due to its financial reserves and the strength of its banking sector.

This makes the South American country an attractive option for property buyers, with US tycoon Sam Zell recently identifying Brazil as one of his top picks for investment opportunities in 2009.
