Brazilian government announces airport improvements

Authorities in Brazil have revealed that the country's airports will receive major upgrades over the next few years.

According to the Associated Press, about £1.3 billion is to be spent on improving transport hubs in cities such as Sao Paulo, Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro.

This is because monthly passenger numbers are expected to double while the South American nation hosts the football World Cup in 2014.

Aviation authorities have recently warned that the existing infrastructure is insufficient to cope with eight million people in a four-week period.

For example, the Brazilian Association of General Aviation said airport operators need to begin carrying out upgrades as soon as possible if they hope to handle this much traffic.

Although Brazil has only staged the World Cup once before, it is the most successful participant in the competition, as it has won the trophy an unprecedented 5 times.
