Britain sees 'biggest-ever festive exodus'

A record number of Britons are preparing to take a foreign holiday in the next ten days, experts have stated.

Estimates from the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) suggested that about 3.5 million people were likely to head abroad between now and January 2nd.

Hot destinations were such as Spain were said to be among the most popular, as many travellers wanted to go to places that offered guaranteed sunshine.

However, ABTA added that high volumes of snow in places such as France and Italy meant that ski resorts in these countries were also proving to be an attractive choice.

The organisation said that conditions in Europe were "fantastic" - a marked contrast to last year's "woeful" skiing season.

Commenting on the trend, ABTA president Justin Fleming said: "This is always a peak time as people make the most of the bank holidays and once again there are a record number travelling."

According to Lastminute.com, the number of people opting to spend the festive season outside of the UK is 11% higher than it was last year.
