British expats 'going online'
British expatriates are widely using the internet as a means of contacting relatives at home, a new study has found.
Alliance & Leicester stated that nearly three-quarters of expats went online each day in order to contact friends and family.
Furthermore, four in ten overseas property buyers were said to use the internet for up to an hour each day to stay in touch with people at home.
This suggests that people considering a move abroad could benefit from investing in an area with broadband internet access.
Alliance & Leicester said that by using the web, people were able to carry out a variety of tasks "regardless of where they are in the world".
The study also highlighted other popular uses of the internet, with many using it as a means of monitoring news coverage at home.
In addition, some were found to use it to manage their finances.
According to official figures, approximately 385,000 Britons moved abroad between July 2005 and July 2006.
