British holidaymakers favour France

France is still one of the most popular destinations among British leisure travellers, a newspaper has stated.

UK-based publication the Independent said the country was still attracting a significant number of Britons, despite growing competition from more exotic locations.

The newspaper cited figures showing that it was second only to Spain in terms of the number of people attracted from the UK in 2006.

Commenting on its appeal, the Independent observed: "France remains a long-term love affair."

The publication added that although the figures for 2007 were not yet available, industry experts believed the number of British visitors would be higher than during the previous year.

This was largely attributed to the interest generated by the new Eurostar rail link to Paris, as well as the reduced journey times it provides.

France was recently found to be one of the most popular markets among overseas property buyers in the UK.

The poll by A Place in the Sun magazine found that the country was again second to Spain.
