Britons 'flying to Spain and France'
Spain and France are still proving to be highly popular holiday destinations among Britons, new figures have revealed.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) stated that although they were facing stronger competition from other countries, the two destinations were attracting the most people from the UK.
Figures showed that between 2005 and 2006, the number of foreign trips made by British holidaymakers rose by 4.7% to 69.5 million.
More than one in three of these journeys were to Spain and France, as they attracted 14.4 million and 10.9 million people respectively.
Although the rate of growth in the number of people travelling to Spain had been relatively low during the previous four years, the country actually saw the largest increase in visits in 2006.
The ONS said the figure went up by 1.9 million when compared with the previous year.
According to official figures, Spain attracted 59.2 million foreign holidaymakers during 2007.
