Britons 'going on last-minute holidays'

An increasing number of Britons are choosing to go on last-minute summer breaks in order to save money.

Research by Sainsbury's showed that 8.8 million people chose to book their holiday within two weeks of travelling, partly due to the number of bargains available online.

London was found to have the highest percentage of people who left booking a holiday until late, closely followed by the rest of south-east England.

Steve Johnson, head of travel insurance at Sainsbury's Bank, commented: "Greater use of the internet and growing competition in the travel industry means that there are many holiday bargains to be had."

This could be good news for overseas property investors, as they would benefit from a late surge in people staying in rental accommodation.

However, the firm recommended that last-minute holidaymakers should not neglect essentials such as travel insurance, as possible problems could prove to be costly without cover.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents, the overall number of holidays taken by Britons this year is set to be about 44 million.
