Britons make cutbacks to fund trips abroad

Consumers in the UK would rather reduce their overall spending instead of give up a holiday abroad, new research has found.

According to Kayak.co.uk, taking a break overseas at least once a year is widely considered to be more important than owning a home, a car or being in a relationship.

Therefore, people who are feeling the effects of the continuing economic downturn are putting money aside in order to afford a holiday and spending less on non-essential items.

Annie Wilson, business development director of Kayak.co.uk, told Reuters: "As a nation, we've always been much more likely to explore the four corners of the earth than to buy the latest flat screen TV."

She added that people who are conscious of their budget can still find good deals to their chosen destinations.

Meanwhile, the Association of British Travel Agents has revealed that the number of holiday bookings for this summer has been very healthy.

The organisation said the "vast majority" of consumers in the UK consider a trip abroad as a necessity, rather than a luxury.
