Britons 'plan to escape economic pressures'

Economic pressures across the world are not affecting consumer confidence among British holidaymakers, according to an industry group.

The Association of Independent Tour Operators stated that bookings for trips such as luxury holidays and city breaks were up this year.

Ian Bradley, spokesperson for the body, said this was despite financial problems that had the potential to affect consumer confidence, such as the global credit crunch.

Speaking to the Guardian, he commented: "The gloomy financial outlook doesn't seem to be making people feel they shouldn't book a holiday."

Mr Bradley stated that the economic situation was instead having the opposite effect, as many were "planning their escape".

Frances Tuke of the Association of British Travel Agents added that Turkey and Portugal were proving to be two of the most popular destinations.

The comments follow research by Alliance & Leicester which found that people from the UK spent more than £23 billion while overseas last year.
