Britons said to be 'unadventurous'
Experts have refuted the suggestion that Britons are not making the most of their trips abroad.
Research by Halifax has found that the majority of tourists from the UK rarely, if ever, leave the confines of their hotel complex while visiting a foreign destination.
People were said to prefer lying by the pool close to their accommodation instead of visiting local attractions and interacting with local people.
However, the results have been met with criticism from the Association of British Travel Agents, which said the suggestion that people from the UK are "unadventurous" is "simply not the case".
Speaking to the Independent, spokesperson Sean Tipton commented: "Brits have been going abroad for about 40 years and our holidaying habits are incredibly varied."
He added that while it is true that most people do not speak the language of their holiday destination, the majority will visit local landmarks such as cathedrals, as well as leisure outlets including restaurants.
Online travel agency Freedom Direct recently revealed that more "exotic" locations such as Morocco are growing in popularity.
