Britons 'travel abroad for Christmas'

An increasing number of British people are choosing to travel abroad during the Christmas season, according to a new survey.

A study by travel search engine Kayak.co.uk found that three-quarters of people were thinking about taking a foreign holiday towards the end of the year.

The weather was cited as one of the main reasons for wanting a holiday, as Britain experienced its wettest summer on record earlier this year.

Almost half of respondents said the poor weather had prompted their decision, while two-thirds of respondents said they wanted a beach holiday in a sunny country.

This is likely to be good news for owners of rental accommodation in the most popular tourist destinations.

Annie Wilson, business development director at Kayak.co.uk, commented: "The great British summer has been a wash out this year, so who can blame us sun-starved Brits for wanting to escape to sunnier shores?"

Last month, the Association of British Travel Agents stated that Christmas was one of the busiest times of the year for the travel industry.
