Budget airline travel 'set to expand in Romania'
The Romanian budget flights market will expand rapidly over the next few years following the country's accession to the European Union (EU) earlier this year, according to one eastern European airline.
Wizz Air, which earlier this month announced a new route between Liverpool and Bucharest, has said it is looking to add to its Romanian operations by selecting a third airport in the country, in addition to Bucharest and Targu Mures.
The news could be a further boost to property investors operating in the area - recently Matt Havercroft, editor of A Place in the Sun magazine, told the Nubricks overseas property news blog that the availability of budget airline routes is "clearly an important consideration" for those looking to rent out holiday homes.
Jozsef Varadi, chief executive of Wizz Air, told the Ziarul Financiar news provider that accession into the EU has produced a "favourable basis" for the expansion of budget airline travel in Romania.
He explained: "Romania has a high growth potential, and I believe it will follow Poland's example of witnessing an upward trend, even though there is not a tradition of air travel in Romania."
Last week, Wizz Air acquired the first of 32 brand new Airbus A320 aircraft on order, with the possibility of a further 12 options. Mr Varadi said the company is "right on track" to become the largest airline in central and eastern Europe.
