Bulgaria targets economic reform

Bulgaria says it is anticipating an upturn in economic fortunes as it bids to improve it standing among the European Union.

A three-year programme unveiled this week is targeting a reduction in inflation and to drive up employment.

Approved by the Bulgarian government yesterday, ministers say the scheme will achieve a reduction in inflation to 2.9% by 2009.

Finance minister Plamen Oresharski told local journalists in Sofia that the aim was to improve the economic standing of the country and to become more robust.

"The programme is centered on sustaining high growth levels and a tight fiscal policy," the Bulgarian Business Journal quoted him as saying.

Bulgaria is targeting inward investment and improvements in economic strategy as part of the country's development since its accession to the EU on January 1st.
