That is the opinion of Capital Economics, which believes the Balkan region is an excellent place to invest.

Neil Shearing, economist with the firm, told finance and investment site This is Money that Bulgaria is seeing "big asset-price bubbles" and heavy real estate investment.

"The currency, the lev, has actually strengthened against sterling," he explained.

"That means British investors have done well because their Bulgarian investment income translates into more pounds."

He added that the "halo effect" of promising to join the euro has been a major factor in creating this profitable investment climate.

Meanwhile, UniCredit Bulbank has predicted that residential property prices in Bulgaria are set to increase this year by 20%, the Sofia News Agency reports.
