Carnival season attracting visitors to Brazil

The number of foreign visitors heading to Brazil is set to increase when the world-famous Rio de Janeiro Carnival gets underway next month.

Described as "the carnival to end all carnivals" by the Telegraph, the event begins on Friday February 20th and continues with street parades until the following Tuesday.

Although tickets to the Sambadromo, the main party venue, can be expensive, many tour operators provide special carnival trips to Brazil which include several nights in Rio.

According to the Rio Carnival's official website, the event brings approximately 500,000 foreign visitors to the city every year.

The website states: "The Rio Carnival is not only the biggest carnival [and the] benchmark against which every other carnival is compared, but also one of the most interesting artistic events on the globe."

Recent figures from Halifax show that the value of the pound against the Brazilian real has risen by 15.3% over the last six months, making the country increasingly affordable for British visitors.
