Celebrity tennis player to plug Cyprus
Tourism authorities in Cyprus are to step up its overseas marketing with the aid of a local celebrity, it has been reported.
According to the Financial Mirror, the Cyprus Tourist Organisation (CTO) has approached tennis star Marcos Baghdatis to promote the island as a tourist destination.
Baghdatis, a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2006, will appear in a number of advertisements which will focus on the country's numerous holiday attractions.
He will also take part in various events such as travel fairs, while his face will be included on literature and memorabilia.
By using a person who is well-known across the world, the CTO's new campaign could potentially have a positive impact on Cyprus's tourist trade.
This is not the first time that a well-known sporting star has promoted the benefits of their indigenous country.
Last year, former Chelsea and Porto boss Jose Mourinho signed up to participate in a campaign designed to attract visitors to Portugal's Algarve region.
