Christmas shoppers 'go to eastern Europe'

Many people are planning to fly to eastern European countries during the festive season, according to experts.

The Association of British Travel Agents said the region was popular with holidaymakers at this time of year because of its Christmas markets.

Sean Tipton, spokesperson for the organisation, stated that the retail facilities in these countries were appealing to Britons because they were very old-fashioned and traditional.

He commented: "It's as much for the cultural experience as for the shopping."

"Christmas markets are getting more and more popular."

The popularity of these destinations could also provide potential opportunities for overseas property owners who have invested in rental accommodation, as they may benefit from increased occupancy.

Mr Tipton added that the aviation sector would also see a surge in business during the lead-up to Christmas, mainly due to the number of people going on shopping holidays.

This comes after travel search engine Kayak.co.uk found that three-quarters of Britons were considering taking a foreign holiday at Christmas time.
