Croatia will focus on education and employment
A World Bank report into the living standards in Croatia has prompted the country's president Stejpan Mesic to assert that improving living standards is vitally important for social and economic development in the country.
The report suggested that in 2004, around 11% of Croatians were living below the poverty line and that the figure can be improved upon with faster creation of jobs and improved social safety nets, the Journal of Turkish Weekly reports.
"Poverty varies widely across regions, from less than 3% in Zagreb to over 20% in the rural Central and Eastern regions. However, the poverty is relatively shallow, with most of the poor not living far below the poverty line," the World Bank's website states.
Vincent Degert of the European Commission asserted that the Croatian government had been focusing on education and employment to improve standards of living in the country.
World Bank expert Salman Zaidi noted that although job creation in Croatia, the economy had been successful in terms of wage growth and gross domestic product.
