Croatian competition makes Turkey increase tourism investment
The Turkish government is launching a new campaign to boost tourism figures, which will also help address the gulf in pro-activity in promoting sectors between the public and private sectors.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has launched two projects in order to better inform potential visitors as to the country's charms and provide them with ideas for activities and itineraries for once they are there.
The ministry's website now displays a guide to 81 Turkish cities, including Istanbul, and the Directorate of Publicity is printing 43 new publications this year to inform tourists.
The campaign is evidence that the Turkish government is heeding the advice of the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2007, which gave the top mark to the country for attendance at travel fairs - thanks to private sector pro-activity - while it fared much worse when ranked on government spending.
The extra investment is good news for a country with vast tourist potential, but stiff competition from neighbours. Financial newspaper Referans reported that Turkey's share of the tourism market will come under threat from Balkan states Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria.
