Cypriot tourism strategy aims to attract 3.5 million by 2010

Cyprus is aiming to further capitalise on its attractiveness to British tourists, and has revealed plans to boost already growing numbers of foreign tourists to 3.5 million by 2010.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, chairman of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) Panos Englezos said a 7 year tourism strategy will focus on diversifying the island's appeal beyond its already appreciated sun and sea.

"Culture and the environment are the main target areas of our plan, in addition to providing good services at reasonable and competitive prices throughout the year," he said. Planned improvements include bicycle paths, wine tours and infrastructure development.

In addition to targeting its main source of foreign tourism, the UK, the CTO will also examine new markets such as Romania, Spain and Kazakhstan, the Financial Mirror reports.

On plans to open a high specification casino on the island, Mr Englezos said the CTO did not want to "rush" into an opening and said that two studies have been commissioned to consider the proposal.
