Cypriots divided over euro
The adoption of the single European currency in Cyprus has divided opinion among local people, a new poll has found.
Research by the Famagusta Gazette found that the euro had been readily welcomed by 37% of respondents since it began circulation on New Year's Day.
The newspaper's survey also found that nearly one in five favoured a return to the pound, while a similar proportion said they "hate" the new currency.
However, 29 per cent said that since the euro had only been in use in Cyprus for two weeks, it was still too early to judge its impact.
The Mediterranean island became a member of the eurozone at the beginning of the year, joining at the same time as Malta.
This means there are now 15 countries across the continent who use the single currency.
Cyprus' entry into the euro came almost four years after it became a member of the European Union.
