Cyprus 'attracting more visitors'
The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has seen an increase in visitor numbers this year, according to an official.
Panos Englezos, chairman of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, stated that the number of holidaymakers coming from countries such as the UK, Russia and France was higher than last year.
This was said to have resulted in higher revenues, as consumer spending for the first 8 months of the year rose to £448 per person, up from £421 during the same period of 2006.
Mr Englezos told the Cyprus Mail: "It is evident that efforts to attract quality tourism are bearing fruit."
However, he added that more needed to be done in order to attract tourists out of season, as authorities did not want Cyprus to be perceived only as a summer destination.
The Financial Mirror recently reported that during the last 12 months, Britons accounted for at least half of all tourists visiting the island.
