Cyprus 'is important for British travellers'

Cyprus is still a very important destination for British travellers, according to a leading airline.

Marianna Trokoudes from British Airways said that in recent years, the Mediterranean island had forged its place in the world as an independent nation and as a member state of the European Union.

Speaking to the Financial Mirror, she stated that this had helped to make it a major location for both the aviation sector and for people in the UK.

She commented: "Through our commitment to the island, we have shown the travelling public that Cyprus continues to be a very important destination for us."

Peter Millett, British high commissioner for Cyprus, added that the relationship between Britain and the island was "special".

The comments were made as part of the celebrations to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the carrier's first services to Cyprus.

Last month, the Financial Mirror reported that during the year to June 2007, income from the tourist sector on the island went up by 3.2%.
