Cyprus targets Chinese tourism
The Cypriot government are making a renewed bid to attract Chinese tourists to the island using the Dubai's Emirates airline.
Emirates is the only link that exists between China, Malta and Cyprus and industry officials see it as the key to tourism success, according to the Cyprus Mail.
Although the island has been targeting the growing Chinese market for the past few years, the Cypriot newspaper reported that only 399 Chinese tourists visited last year.
This was down on the 424 who visited in 2005 and fell far below the target of 30,000 aimed for in 2005.
A spokesperson for CTO said to the newspaper: "We are making an effort with Malta. We are in the process of working on the Chinese market together and still looking for the best formula."
However, hopes for better relations between the two countries were triggered by a recent meeting between Chinese and Cypriot officials in China this week.
