Economic conditions 'drive people abroad'

More than one in three Britons are considering moving abroad because of current economic conditions in the UK, a new poll has found.

Research by currency specialist HiFX found that factors such as house prices and mortgage payments had led to 37% of people thinking of relocating overseas.

One in four respondents stated that they had started to think about buying a foreign property because they were struggling to meet their mortgage repayments at home.

This is partly due to interest rates in the UK, which have risen 5 times since August 2006.

Britons aged between 25 and 34 were said to be the most likely group to consider a move abroad, with countries such as France and Italy among the most popular destinations.

Mark Bodega, director at HiFX, commented: "It would now seem that more and more people are no longer considering emigration as a luxury but a necessity."

However, he urged prospective expats to research all the relevant issues before committing to a move, largely because of the current uncertainly in the global economy.
