Emerging markets attract more visitors
Many emerging European economies are experiencing growth in their holiday industries, new figures have revealed.
According to the European Travel Commission (ETC), the continent enjoyed another year of upwards growth last year, with tourist numbers going up by 4%.
Although traditional destinations such as France and Spain remained the most popular hotspots overall, less-established countries were found to be becoming increasingly popular.
Montenegro was flagged up as one location which saw significant growth in its tourism sector, as the number of foreign arrivals went up by more than 20 per cent.
In addition, visitor numbers in Turkey rose by a similar proportion last year.
Commenting on this trend, Rob Franklin of ETC stated that this could be good for their respective economies.
He said: "Governments of many emerging economies have earmarked tourism as a means of diversification."
This, he added, has resulted in "huge investment" in tourism infrastructure development and marketing.
According to figures from Abbey, more than one in four Britons are planning to holiday in Europe this summer.
