Environmental concerns 'boosting European destinations'

Growing concerns over the state of the environment could cause more UK-based holidaymakers and property owners to consider European markets, it has been claimed.

Shelter Offshore states that British investors with properties in far-flung destinations could find the size of their rental market decreases as more people look to reduce their carbon footprint by staying closer to home.

Consequently, traditional European destinations such as France, Spain and Portugal will benefit from renewed interest because they can be reached without the need for long-haul flights.

The website states: "Because Europe is accessible - one can drive to it for example - the carbon footprint argument is less of a concern."

Shelter Offshore adds that cost concerns may also cause the number of people choosing long-haul destinations to drop, with the economic crisis making inexpensive trips to closer countries more attractive.

France was recently described as "the top tourist destination in the world" by Indian newspaper the Economic Times.
