Erdogan tells military 'to stay out'

The Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged the military to stay out of political affairs in the country.

He cited the constitution in his comments and stated that all institutions should carry out the duties laid out in it, reports Today's Zaman.

Mr Erdogan added that the Justice and Development party will attempt not to gloss over the needs of minorities in the country.

The official urged people to welcome the possible new president in the country Abdullah Gul, saying that he was a major part of the future of Turkey.

"If they do not accept this person as the president, they should assume the citizenship of a country whose president is fit for them," he told the Kanal D channel in Turkey.

Mr Gul recently failed to get elected as president, needing to obtain 367 votes in total to be granted power in the first round of elections. It is now believed that he will be elected during the third round of votes, taking place later in the month.
