EU aims to close broadband gap
The gap between the best and the worst broadband speed performers in Europe needs to be closed, according to an EU report.
While some countries are leading the world in broadband performance, others are lagging far behind, the European Commission stated.
Weak competition and sloppy regulation are cited as the chief obstacles to broadband growth.
A lack of "significant alternative infrastructures" in some member states is one issue, as is the "need for a more consistent and speedy application of existing remedies", it added.
The EU Telecom Rules will be published by the commission next month and will promote effective competition on the broadband markets as a way to achieve "broadband for all".
EU telecoms commissioner Viviane Reding said: "Broadband growth remains strong
however, it is unacceptable that the gap between the strongest and weakest performers in Europe is growing.
"Europe must act now to get its broadband house in order."
Demark was rated as the top broadband performer of all 27 EU states.
