EU Report: Cyprus offers the best quality beaches in Europe
Cyprus offers Europe's highest-quality bathing areas, according to a new report from the EU looking into the quality of member states' beaches.
The survey revealed that both Cyprus and Greece achieved near-perfect scores over the course 2006 - out of the 100 sites assessed in Cyprus, 99 fulfilled the EU's guide and mandatory standards.
Only one beach failed to comply with the organisation's guidelines and there were no new beaches assessed since the 2005 survey.
Cyprus is a popular tourist resort, as well as a property investment destination, meaning the new statistics are likely to be welcomed by visitors to the country.
A statement from the report authors said: "Knowing they have clean and safe water to swim or play in is an important factor in their choice of a holiday or weekend destination. Also for the tourist industry, clean and safe water is an important argument to attract visitors to an area."
Earlier this year, budget airline Monarch announced the launch of new flights Cyprus from the UK - something that is likely to provide a further boost to the tourist industry.
