Euro changeover in Cyprus 'has gone smoothly'

Cyprus's currency changeover has gone according to plan following its accession to the euro earlier this year.

Both the euro and the pound had been in joint circulation since the new currency was introduced at the beginning of January.

However, the pound has now been withdrawn and the euro is the sole legal tender on the Mediterranean island.

Commenting on the transition, the European Central Bank (ECB) said it has gone smoothly and been completed successfully.

The organisation remarked: "Timely and comprehensive preparation has been a key precondition for a smooth introduction of the euro banknotes and coins."

Furthermore, it stated that no unforeseen circumstances occurred and no plans need to be adjusted.

The ECB added that the public response to the currency changeover had been "very positive" in Cyprus.

Although the pound is no longer in circulation, people with leftover notes and coins still have a limited amount of time in which to get their money converted into euros.
