Eurostar passenger numbers go up
The number of people using Eurostar's rail services has gone up by more than a fifth this year, the firm has revealed.
According to figures from the train operator, passenger numbers during the first quarter of 2008 were 21.3% higher than during the same period of 2007.
This was said to be partly due to the opening of a multimillion high-speed rail link between London and Paris, which allows passage from one city to the other in just 2 hours and 20 minutes.
Commenting on the increase, Eurostar's Richard Brown said: "It shows that High Speed 1 and our fabulous new stations are capturing people's imagination."
He added that the move towards rail travel shows that consumers are increasingly opting to use more eco-friendly means of going abroad.
Earlier this week, ShelterOffshore.com credited Eurostar with helping to boost interest in the French property market among British investors.
According to the website, the reduced journey times it now provides has led to more and more people in the UK looking at buying a house in France.
