Expats 'need to know language'
People who are considering moving abroad full-time have been urged to learn the language of their new home.
Amanda Lamb, presenter of Channel 4's A Place in the Sun, said not knowing the native tongue could create problems for foreign expats.
She stated that not being able to interact with locals could make living in a foreign location permanently "very hard".
"When you are moving to a different country you have got to make the effort to learn their language and learn their culture," she commented.
Ms Lamb added that if people are thinking of living in another country on a permanent basis, it may be a good idea to stay there for a limited period of time first.
This, she said, would enable people to "get a feel" for the place and make sure they like it before making any commitments.
The comments come after a study commissioned by the British government revealed that nearly three-quarters of young people would like to live and work overseas.
However, the research also showed that most 11 to 18-year-olds are not fluent in a second language, despite their desire to move to non-English-speaking countries such as Spain.
