Expats 'should sample life in new home'

People who are thinking of emigrating to another country have been encouraged to sample living abroad before committing to a permanent move.

According to Calculis, this would enable prospective expatriates to get to know their destination of choice and determine whether living there full-time suits them.

Alex Pegley, director of the organisation, said migrants could live in rented accommodation before buying a permanent residence.

He commented: "Rent somewhere for a year or two, get to know the area and get to know how business is done there."

However, he urged overseas property buyers to make sure that any foreign residence is bought from a trustworthy vendor.

According to currency specialist HiFX, a growing number of people in the UK are looking into the possibility of moving abroad on a permanent basis.

Figures showed that between January and June, the number of enquiries the group received from prospective migrants was 30 per cent up on the first half of last year.
