Expert: French property does not necessarily mean expensive property

France may well have a reputation for being an expensive property investment destination - but this does not always need to be the case, according to one property expert.

Adrian Leeds, an American expatriate who edits the French Property Insider newsletter, explained that many investors seek overpriced accommodation in popular districts, when in fact there are many opportunities for affordable property.

Speaking to property writer Shannon Roxburgh for the North Jersey Herald, Mr Leeds said that finding affordable property in France can take an open mind and a knack for identifying a good prospect.

He commented: "Keeping an open mind by looking for properties which need a bit of renovation or those in less gentrified areas can yield some hidden gems."

Mr Leeds added that renovation bills can cost as much as a property itself, although he concluded that "anyone can find an affordable home in France".

Nicolas Sarkozy, the new French president, has hinted that he would like to see changes to the French property market - and possibly to the benefit of overseas property investors, according to some experts.
