Faltering economy boosts ferry travel

Owners of rental accommodation in France could be set to indirectly benefit from the global economic downturn.

According to the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA), the rising cost of fuel is having a negative effect on the low-cost aviation sector.

As a result, many consumers are choosing to book holidays to short-haul destinations which are easily accessible by other means, such as by sea.

This is likely to be positive news for buy-to-let investors who have purchased tourist accommodation in France, as it is well-serviced by ferry operators.

William Gibbons, director of the PSA, commented: "People are holidaying closer to home and ferry travel is geared to [people travelling to] the near continent."

He added that travelling by ferry can be "incredibly good value", especially if people are prepared to travel outside the peak period.

According to a study commissioned by the PSA, the number of Britons using ferries to travel abroad rose by 3.5% during the year to February 2008.
