Festive holidaymakers 'fleeing family members'

Britain's cold weather is not the only factor driving people out of the country this winter, according to new research.

Online travel agency Lastminute.com said that a growing number of people were opting to spend Christmas abroad in order to avoid spending it with relatives.

The prospect of enjoying hot and sunny weather overseas was said to be more appealing than spending the festive season visiting family members.

John Bevan, managing director of the firm, said: "It would appear Britons are opting out of the pressures of a family Christmas, which include having to visit both your own parents and the in-laws."

Figures from the firm showed that the number of people opting to spend the festive season outside of the UK was 11% higher than during the same period of 2006.

This comes after research by the Post Office revealed that almost a fifth of Christmas holidaymakers were choosing to enjoy their festivities in Spain.
