First round fails to elect president
Justice and Development party candidate Abdullah Gul led the voting in the first round of Turkish presidential elections, but the results were inconclusive.
During the opening round, Mr Gul obtained 341 votes - short of the total 367 needed to be elected into power, reports Today's Zaman.
Such a vote comes after May's aborted election attempt, when the constitutional court upheld complaints from the opposition - the Republican People's party, which said that 367 officials should have been present.
According to Koksal Toptan, the parliament speaker in Turkey, the president will attempt to unify the country.
"Candidates from different political parties will compete today. But the candidate who is elected, no matter what party he comes from or what his ideology is, will be the president of everyone," he said.
Last week, the official gained the support of the European Union enlargement officer Olli Rehn, who said that he had done well to reform Turkey.
